The Color of the Season...Winter White
Designers love white because we can pretty much introduce ANY accent color and it will work. So I for one am happy that White is the color for 2016. Ironically enough, I chose Sherwin Williams Alabaster #SW7008 as the interior color for the Distinctive Interiors showroom before even knowing it was their 2016 Color of the Year.
White is timeless, works with any design style and always looks clean & fresh. However, if you are going to use white you really need to decorate appropriately. You just can’t put a sofa against a white wall and think you are finished or your living room is going to look like you just moved in. The sofa is going to need a nice piece of art above it or a collection of mirrors ----- something with interest, texture or a pop of color. Add some accent pillows on your upholstered furniture and coordinate with the accent color you have chosen to decorate with. Mix patterns with solids (or textures) and remember you need to provide interest and color to offset your white walls. This is assuming that you have a light colored sofa, if you are in the darker tones (like a leather sofa in chocolate brown) you will have more contrast but you will still need accent pillows, artwork or a collection of some sort.
So I say – WHITE is great. You can’t go wrong and people won’t walk into your home saying “What were they thinking?” But you will need to make sure you have a cohesive design scheme to pull everything together, otherwise your room can end up looking stark and sterile.
