Designer Finishing Touches
Since we designers are constantly installing new rooms we have some tried-and-true methods that we utilize when adding those last "finishing touches" that make a home shine.
Flower arrangements (either silks or fresh) add a pop of color and softness to any room. I typically use florals in dining rooms, in living spaces on coffee or end tables and on bedroom dressers or nightstands.
In bathrooms, I like to use orchids as they have nice height and come in a variety of interesting colors. Orchids add a freshness & lightness and work with any design style (traditional, coastal, modern, etc.).
Lamps help anchor a room by adding symmetry, height and interest. Adding a lamp in a certain colorway, texture or metal finish helps complete the room and is a way to repeat or compliment your design motif or palette. I generally always flank a bed or sofa with lamps (either table or floor style).
3.) ACCENT PILLOWS
New accent pillow are truly the easiest way to bring in some updating or refreshing into your home. Splurge and get down feather inserts and pillow covers in a good fabric (interesting pattern or color) and update your sofas and bedding. Utilize pillows of varying sizes and mix/match patterns, styles, colors to create a unique design. Don't just use the standard pillow size of 18" square - as employing all the same size is boring and sometimes too small for a large sofa or bed.
Having a color, texture and/or pattern on the floor really makes the room complete. Seek out rugs that are the correct scale/size for your room size and furniture arrangement. Coordinate your rug style/color with your design palette and make sure that it compliments and doesn't fight your scheme.
5.) SIGNATURE LIGHTING
A signature light fixture in a room - is like finishing off a great outfit with a striking piece of jewelry. It adds that bit of sparkle that completes the look..... I always emphasize to my clients that they really need to have a feature lighting fixture in areas they want to highlight or in areas they want to create a dramatic effect. I always select interesting pendant fixtures above dining tables, luxury master bedrooms or bathrooms, foyers, etc. Adding a chandelier or a distinctive fixture in these areas makes a statement and has occupants take notice that these areas are highlighted.
