Most new homes today incorporate a kitchen island or perimeter island as part of their design. An island is a great way to combine both the cooking and dining space into one. Families love it - as kids can work on homework while Mom or Dad prepare dinner or a snack. Singles or Empty-nesters love them as they can eat a nice meal in comfort while not retreating to the Dining or Breakfast space.
Questions to consider:
#1) Counter Height or Bar Height? This is the MOST important thing to know - the correct height of your kitchen island. Counter height is 36" high. This is the same height of your kitchen sink and is working counter height. This means the island is the same height as the perimeter kitchen base cabinets.
Bar Height is 42" high. If you have a bar height counter you need a Bar Stool (not a counter stool).
#2) Swivel or No Swivel? If you are an avid TV watcher - you may need a swivel. As obviously, easiest way to move stool around is with a swivel seat. That said Swivel stools cost more and are harder to find.
#3) Upholstery or Wood? You can purchase stools in fabric or leather (or faux leather) OR do you want all wood? Upholstery Fabrics are harder to keep clean. Leather will be more expensive than Fabric. Upholstered stools will be more comfortable than an all wood back and seat. If purchasing with young children in the home - wood or faux leather may be the way to go due to easy cleanability and price point.
#4) Back or Backless? We find 99.9% of people want stools with backs. Sitting for a long time without a back typically is uncomfortable for most people.
#5) Arms or Armless? This is a personal comfort issue. If the island is small or tight - you may want to consider armless. They take up less space and are generally easier to get in & out of. Arms are nice for the elderly/seniors as they provide more stability while sitting and provide an extra suface to hold on to while getting in/out.
#6) Materials? There are so many options. Think about the style of your home and continue in that direction. Coastal - consider wovens or rattan. Modern - consider metal frame with leather or upholstered seat/back. Traditional - consider wood frame with upholstered or leather seat. Country/Farmhouse - consider painted metal or wood.
