Don't forget the Ceiling!!

Now this article is more for those working on new construction projects. I tell most of my clients it is very difficult to alter ceilings in an existing home because we aren't sure what HVAC and electrical is behind the drywall; thus very hard to modify (unless you are doing a major construction project with demolition and a licensed General Contractor). I mention this, as many times I have had clients doing a refresh or minor renovations that want to incorporate new ceiling designs or elements in their home. This is very hard to do after-the-fact. You cannot easily move return or supply air vents, or recessed can lights; so very, very difficult to change the ceiling in your home without major demolition.
Also ceiling design and detailing is best left to a professional design team as it truly is a learned art and should be part of the early design process when preparing and creating construction drawings.
When you are designing for construction these are some items to consider
-Adding Beams
We love adding beams to our ceilings. They can be rustic (antiqued or salvaged) or beatifully, tailored in crisp white or richly stained. Beams always dress up a ceiling and really transform the space into something much more interesting.
-Step Up or Tray Ceilings
Adding a simple step up in the ceiling provides a dramatic effect for chandelier placement, and allows the addition of accent paint, wallpaper or even beams wthin the step up. They add a feeling of luxury and elegance and can be trimmed out with crown moulding and even LED perimeter lighting.
-Tongue & Groove
We love adding this natural wood element; stained or in crisp white paint or a bold color. These interlocking wood planks, can be rustic (knotty pine) or can be elegant (dark stained, or painted). They add interest and pattern to a ceiling.
-Coffered Tray
Adding recessed panels in a grid pattern, always adds interest and creates a formal high-end look. The inset panels can be painted, wallpapered or finished with tongue & grooved detailing.
Adding ceiling elements really does dress up a home and the addition of these architectural elements helps establish the design style and also increases the market value of your home.
