A kitchen backsplash is an important factor in your kitchen; having one is crucial for protecting your walls from food splatter, grease, steam etc.

Function should be your #1 priority, but it does not mean that you have to sacrifice style. Your backsplash is one of the main elements in your kitchen that can bring drama, style, personality and enhance the beauty of your space. It gives you a chance to add color and texture that will complement the overall design of the kitchen.

Here are a few things to consider as you choose the perfect backsplash for your kitchen:

Maintenance & Cleanability:

Investigate the type of material - tile or slab and how it will perform over time? Is it easily cleaned? Will grout lines be a factor? Are there any routine maintenance requirements? Can the material be scrubbed easily without damage? Will it be able to withstand high temperatures? Is it porous?

Porcelain, glass or ceramic tiles are ideal for behind your range, since they are nonporous and resistant to fading, heat, moisture, and staining.

We also love stone slabs (up from the countertop to top of the backsplash) for a modern, seamless look.  Quartzite, granite and porcelain slabs are a great option.   Marbles can be used but are more porous. Quartz (man-made) can also be used but be cautious when installing behind high-heat gas ranges & cooktops. The high-heat can possibly scorch of the resin components (so be sure to discuss with your Contractor, Designer or Fabricator before choosing quartz) material.

Keep in mind that natural stone materials like marble, quartzite and granite require regular sealing (usually once per year) to prevent staining & maintain appearance.

Aesthetics:

The color palette of your backsplash can be a nice contrast with the rest of your kitchen or the design style can complement as a neutral.

To ensure a cohesive design, select your cabinetry, flooring and countertops at the same time. Be sure to view your potential backsplash selections with all of your finishes.  Tile Showrooms usually let customers check out samples or if buying from a Big Box Home Improvement store (like Floor & Decor, Home Depot or Lowes) purchase an individual sheet (usually 12"x12") or a single tile to bring home to view with your existing finishes that will not be changing.

Style:

Do you want a soft or bold colors, patterns or solids, contrast or neutrals? Traditional or Modern?

Keep in mind, most likely you will not be changing for a pretty long time. So best to choose something timeless that you will not tire of.

Choose what speaks to you, if you really can't decide engage a friend you believe has great taste or hire a Designer or Decorator to help!
