Biophilic Design is a concept that entails connecting nature and the outdoors to our everyday environment by replicating or reflecting the rhytems and patterns of nature. Even though it is a fairly new term - examples of Biophilic Design have been seen in architecture as far back as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (so we are talking about One of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world).
Yes, it is trending now but what exactly does it mean or how can I incorporate biophilic design into my home? Well, a simple way is bringing in more natural elements into your home. Bringing greenery (potted plants or small trees) into your home. If you have more space, think "living" walls and vertical gardens.
Natural Light....Natural Light and Natural Light...such an easy thing to do. Open those heavy shades and blinds and let the light shine in. Change your light bulbs to 2700 Kelvin. Kelvin is the color temperature of a light bulb. 2700K is a daylight color (has a hint of yellow). A 4000K is a blue light (like a hospital setting). So look at the bulbs in your lamps as well as your ceiling fixtures and swap out to 2700 to 3000K. (Get rid of that blue light!)
Another option is to bring natural materials and elements into your home design. Think....natural woods, organic fibers & textiles and natural stone. We personally love natural stone slabs like marbles, granite or quartzite (rather than man-made quartz) for countertops. Choose upholstery fabrics and area rugs constructed of natural, organic fibers - cottons, linens, bamboo, jute or sisal. Incorporate river rock, salvaged wood, wickers, rattans, etc. into your home interiors.
Remember the saying.....there are no straight lines in nature. Incorporate soft curves and round shapes within the furniture and accessories in your home.....
