How to Choose the Right Area Rug for Your Space

An area rug can completely transform a room. It can define a seating area, add warmth and texture, introduce color, and help all of your furniture feel connected. But choosing the right area rug involves more than simply finding a pattern you love. Size, placement, material, color, and lifestyle all play an important role in finding the perfect rug for your home.
At Distinctive Interiors, we incorporate area rugs into our full-service interior design projects, along with furnishings, lighting, artwork, window treatments, and accessories. Explore our interior design services to see how these elements work together.
Here are a few things we consider when selecting an area rug for an interior design project.
1. Start With the Size
One of the most common mistakes we see is choosing an area rug that’s too small for the room.
A rug should generally be large enough to visually anchor the furniture within a space. In a living room, for example, having at least the front legs of your furniture sitting on the rug can help create a more cohesive arrangement. In a dining room, make sure the rug extends far enough beyond the table so chairs stay on the rug when they’re pulled out. The right size can make a room feel more intentional and balanced.
2. Think About How the Room Will Be Used
Before falling in love with a particular rug, think about your lifestyle.
Is the room heavily used? Do you entertain frequently? Are there children or pets in the home?
High-traffic spaces may benefit from durable, easy-to-maintain materials, while a more delicate rug might suit a formal sitting room or another low-traffic area. Consider fiber content & ability to clean. Avoid silk and viscose in high-traffic areas (or areas with potential spills or pets). New Zealand Wool is one of the best fibers for durability & ability to clean.
For outdoor or Florida living spaces, consider indoor/outdoor rugs, which offer added flexibility in spaces that transition between indoor and outdoor living. Many polypropylene or olefin rugs are durable enough for outdoor use but have the look of jute or another natural fiber.
A beautiful rug is wonderful, but it should also work for the way you actually live.
3. Consider Color & Pattern
Your area rug is an opportunity to introduce color and personality into your home.
If your furniture and walls are relatively neutral, a patterned rug can become a beautiful focal point. On the other hand, if your room already has several patterns and colors, a more subtle rug may help balance the space. We also consider the colors already in the room and look for a rug that complements those tones rather than matching them exactly.
4. Don't Forget Texture
Color isn't the only way a rug can add visual interest. Texture can make a room feel warmer and more layered. Natural fibers, woven materials, wool, and other textured options can each create a completely different atmosphere. In a coastal or Florida-inspired home, for example, natural textures can create a relaxed, effortless feeling that works beautifully with the surrounding environment. You can also explore our coastal interior design projects to see how natural textures and layered materials can be incorporated into a complete home design.
5. Let the Rug Connect the Room
Think of an area rug as a bridge between the different elements in your space. A well-chosen rug can bring together your furniture, window treatments, artwork, flooring, and accessories by subtly repeating colors or textures throughout the room. It doesn't have to match everything perfectly. In fact, we often prefer when it doesn't! The goal is to create harmony and balance.
Finding the Perfect Area Rug
Choosing an area rug may seem like a small part of an interior design project, but it can have a major impact on the finished space. The right rug should be beautiful, appropriately scaled, fit your lifestyle, and connect to the rest of the room.
And remember: bigger isn't always better, but too small can make even a beautifully designed room feel disconnected. When in doubt, start with the furniture layout and work from there!
