Investing in the interior design and decor of your home can be costly. Avoid these trendy mistakes and hasty purchases to ensure you don't have additional headaches and expensive problems to fix!

#1 CHEAP POORLY MADE SOFAS (Upholstery)

You are most likely going to sit every day on your sofa. This purchase is an investment and purchasing an inferior quality from a no-name internet site can be a big mistake. Weak frames made from plywood can crack. Thin fabrics can pull, stretch or pill. Inferior cushions will mat down and loose shape within months. Do some research and only purchase from a known retailer, make sure sofa has a hardwood frame, make sure you understand the fabric (fiber content), durability and cleanability.

Manufacturer we recommend for a good quality budget sofa include: Bassett Furniture

#2 BACKLESS COUNTERSTOOLS or BARSTOOLS

Unless you are under the age of 25, we really do not recommend purchasing backless stools for your kitchen island or bar. Without back support, sitting for longer than a few minutes can be painful for some people (especially those of us that are older). A back will supply proper lumbar support, but best for you to sit in a floor model to determine what feels best for you.

#3 INFERIOR OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Cheaply made exterior furniture will not last long in the elements. Metals can rust and stain pavers or lanai floor finishes. Resin wovens can unravel and inferior cushions will stain and not hold up against rain, pollen and sunlight. Choose furniture with aluminum or stainless steel frames (so they will not rust). Make sure cushion fabrics are constructed with Sunbrella, Revolution or a similar 100% solution dyed acrylic or olefin fabric constructed especially for exterior use.

#4 LOW PROFILE PLATFORM BEDS

The Top of your mattress should be at 25" high if you want to sit with your feet touching the floor. You need to think about the bed height to ensure it isn't too low (which makes it harder to get out of it every morning). Platform beds do not require a box spring or foundation (which is great) but if your mattress is only 12" high - is it going to be too low for you? Will you have any space under the bed (for storage)? These are just questions you need to ask your Store Retailer before purchasing to ensure the platform bed isn't going to be too low for you.
