When most people think of wallcoverings - they think of “wallpaper”.   But today wallcoverings emcompass a full range of coverings that are made of materials that are not “paper”.    If you are looking for something truly unique for your home here are some ideas.

Wood Veneer

You can actually buy a wallcovering that is a very, very thin piece of wood.  These wallcoverings come in all different colors and patterns.   If you really want wood wainscoting (or something similar) and can’t install that type of architectural detailing in your home - a wood veneer wallcovering is a great substitute.   Much easier to install, less costly and easier to change/remove.

Cork Wallcovering

Cork walls and coverings have been used in interior design for over a century.  Cork has been harvested for centuries, but it’s used in wall tiling and surfacing began to gain traction in 1891.   It’s a sustainable material and has acoustic properties and is available as a wallcovering in all different patterns and colors (including metallics).

Grasscloth Wallcovering

Grasscloth wallcovering is made of natural fibers with a paper backing.   It’s a catch-all term, but most are made from natural grasses like arrowroot, jute, hemp and seagrass.   Available in endless colors, and even as a background with printed patterns it use is endless.  It does show seams and has natural variations.   It provides wonderful texture and softens walls.  It compliments any decor type including modern, traditional, rustic, coastal and tropical.

Metallic Wallcovering

If you are looking for drama or a wow - metallic wallcovering is something to consider.   It comes in everything from budget pricing up to luxurious artisanal wallcoverings with detailed embroidery, metallic gold or silver leaf accents.   It provides luster and subtle or dramatic textures.  Pearlescent and metallic pigments add a level of glamour and reflection that can’t be beat.

Glass Bead Wallcovering

Tiny glass beads provide a dimensional, reflective quality while introducing a touch of glamour and opulence.  This is to be used when a touch of luxury or where shine is desired.  It requires gentle care when cleaning in order to avoid removing beads from the surface.

Some additional luxury wallcoverings include Capiz Shell, Mica, Faux Animal Hide (Snakeskin, Ostrich, Alligator, etc.) and the most expensive we have seen is real Feather!
